Expert Veterinary Surgery in the Berks County Area

Veterinary Surgery Lancaster

At Conrad Weiser Animal Hospital, we offer you and your pet surgical options ranging from spays and neuters to abdominal exploratories and bone plating. Dr. Mike Comalli has an extensive background in veterinary surgery and continues to develop his skills in order to provide you and your pet the best surgical care and outcome possible.

Before any surgical procedure, pets are seen and examined by one of our veterinarians. In our well-equipped operating room, your pet’s blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation, respirations, ECG, and heart rate are all continuously monitored throughout the surgery. While your pet is recovering from the procedure, our trained technicians and doctors continue to monitor and observe your pet during his or her stay at Conrad Weiser Animal Hospital.

Anesthesia

Anesthesia is needed to safely and painlessly perform surgical procedures. To decrease the risks of anesthesia, we examine your pet the day of surgery. Depending on the pet’s age and risk status, blood tests are taken to evaluate organs such as the liver and kidney.

After admitting your pet to the hospital, we administer injectable pain relievers and sedatives. Intravenous catheters are placed in most pets for fluid and medication administration during and after the procedure.

Our anesthetic protocols allow surgical patients to wake from anesthesia comfortably, and most go home by the end of the day!

Soft Tissue Surgery

Soft tissues of the body are tissues that are not bone or teeth. Conrad Weiser Animal Hospital performs various soft tissue surgeries, many of which are performed on a same-day schedule, meaning your pet is admitted in the morning and discharged that evening.

At Conrad Weiser Animal Hospital, Dr. Mike Comalli performs soft tissue surgery from “head to tail.” Common soft tissue surgeries include:

  • Facial surgeries

Eyelid deformity correction, injury, tumor resection, enucleation, proptosis of the globe, and conjunctival flap positioning for non-healing corneal ulcers.
  • Abdominal procedures

Hernia repair, intestinal blockage, bloat, splenectomy, and exploratory surgery to aid in diagnoses.
  • Urinary and reproductive surgeries

Spay, neuter, Cesarean section, pyometra, urethrostomy, and bladder stone removal.
  • Feline thyroidectomy

  • Laceration repair

  • Mass or tumor removal

  • Biopsies

Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic procedures are performed on bones or joints. For our fracture patients, we offer bone plating as well as pin and wire fixation. For our patients suffering from knee or hip problems, cruciate ligament surgery and femoral head osteotomy (FHO) for hip dysplasia (FHO) are some of the more common procedures we perform.

Dr. Mike Comalli has been awarded the distinguished achievement of certification by The University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program (PennHIP).

Pain Control

Controlling pain after surgery is an important part of your pet’s recovery. At Conrad Weiser Animal Hospital, your pet is given pain medication at the time of anesthesia in order to reduce the amount of post-operative discomfort. Local anesthetics or nerve blocks are used to lower the amount of anesthesia needed during surgery. Depending on the procedure performed, your pet may be sent home with a “pain patch” or oral pain medication to keep him or her comfortable during recovery.

Heat Stroke in Dogs

Heat Stroke in Dogs

Even in relatively mild climates like ours, the heat index can create dangerous circumstances for pets and people alike. The combination of rising temperatures, scorching UV rays, and suffocating humidity force many of us indoors where we can enjoy the hum of air conditioning all summer long.  Active dogs may not recognize the adverse effects […]

All pets are worthy and deserving of stable, safe, comfortable homes regardless of their species, breed, gender, or age. That being said, however, younger pets generally enjoy faster adoption rates than older ones. And while most of us are helpless against the overwhelming cute factor attached to kittens and puppies, there is truly nothing like […]
