Extra TLC for Senior Pets

Berks County veterinarian senior pet care

At Conrad Weiser Animal Hospital, we consider most cats and dogs to be “seniors” by the age of nine. As pets age, changes in health are common, but there are many ways we can help pets age comfortably so that their quality of life does not diminish. Signs of aging can be subtle at first, sometimes going unnoticed until the problem becomes more serious.

Signs of a Problem in Your Older Pet

  • Deteriorating vision, hearing, or sense of smell
  • Diminished desire for physical activity or play
  • General behavioral changes or cognitive impairment
  • Sudden weight loss or gain
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty passing urine
  • Breathing heavily at rest
  • Hair loss
  • Increased size of the abdomen

We prefer to see senior pets twice a year so that we can catch any medical problems early, before they become more serious. Many chronic age-related conditions can be treated effectively with medications and diet so that your pet can stay active and comfortable as long as possible.

Common Health Issues for Senior Pets

  • Arthritis
  • Dental disease
  • Kidney or urinary tract disease
  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer

Wellness Exams for Senior Pets

Wellness exams are important for every stage in your pet’s life, but they are particularly important as your pet ages since that’s when more serious medical conditions are most likely to occur. At your senior pet’s wellness exam, your veterinarian will conduct a thorough physical examination, along with other diagnostic tests such as blood work (CBC, chemistry screen) and urinalysis. We may also perform X-rays or ultrasound to view internal organs, heart, and possible growths or tumors.

Our Affordable Wellness Plans help keep your companion comfortable and healthy throughout his or her senior years, providing a longer life together with your family.

Heat Stroke in Dogs

Heat Stroke in Dogs

Even in relatively mild climates like ours, the heat index can create dangerous circumstances for pets and people alike. The combination of rising temperatures, scorching UV rays, and suffocating humidity force many of us indoors where we can enjoy the hum of air conditioning all summer long.  Active dogs may not recognize the adverse effects […]

Should You Adopt a Senior Pet? Absolutely!

All pets are worthy and deserving of stable, safe, comfortable homes regardless of their species, breed, gender, or age. That being said, however, younger pets generally enjoy faster adoption rates than older ones. And while most of us are helpless against the overwhelming cute factor attached to kittens and puppies, there is truly nothing like […]
