Arthritis: A Painful Pet Problem
Arthritis is one of the most common problems dogs and cats face when they reach middle age and beyond. Yet while arthritis can be painful, there are many safe and effective treatments available to make your pet comfortable.
Signs that Your Pet May be Suffering from Arthritis:
-
Limping
You might notice your pet favoring a leg or showing signs of discomfort when getting up from a laying down position. The signs may diminish as your pet “warms up.” -
Change in activity
Some dogs that once got into a car easily find it painful when they are suffering from arthritis. Cats that once bounded onto countertops and other high areas may stay close to the ground. -
Spinal problems
Arthritis can also affect the spine, causing a pet’s back to hunch or lameness in one or both hind legs. -
Exhaustion
You may notice your dog wanting shorter walks or your dog or cat spending more time sleeping or resting. -
Snapping/biting
Your pet may react defensively if touched or handled in a manner that increases their pain. -
Muscle atrophy
Muscle tissue can decrease in strength due to inactivity. A pet with atrophied muscles in the legs will have a leg that looks thinner than a normal leg. -
Licking
Pets suffering from pain, whether it’s caused by arthritis or other factors, will often lick, chew, or bite at the area that is hurting. This can sometimes cause inflamed skin or hair loss in the affected areas.
Arthritis cannot be cured but it can be treated effectively to ease your pet’s suffering. If you notice any changes in your pet’s demeanor, please contact us immediately to schedule an appointment. Your pet will be glad you did!
